    Health and Safety
Personal Safety: Safety harnesses or restraint belts will be provided and worn by scaffolders erecting or dismantling scaffolding. SABS compliant harnesses and restraint belts are to be used. competent in scaffolding supervision, erection and maintenance before erection and at least once a week. Safety helmets and where applicable, eye and face protectors, protective footwear, gloves and appropriate safety harnesses/restraint belts will be worn by workers erecting or dismantling scaffolding. No person will be allowed on scaffolding during hazardous weather conditions. Public access to the scaffolding will be prevented wherever possible i.e. by physical barriers. Where the prevention of public access to the scaffolding is difficult and where children are at risk, access ladders will be removed and a watchman will be present when the scaffolding is not in use.

Safety Signs: Symbolic safety signs that comply with the requirements and of a size 205 x 205mm, if not already required in general site signage, will be placed or attached to the nearest entry point to the scaffolding or be placed in a prominent position to warn the public.

    Example:
WW1 -To warn the public of scaffolding erection (general warning of hazard)
PV3 - To prevent workers of using incomplete scaffolding
GA8 - To advise workers that scaffolding is safe to use.

Inspection: Frames thickness will be checked for out of squareness or twists (or both) before and during use and before storage. A frame that has been straightened shall have all welds checked for cracks. All scaffolding and tower materials shall be carefully inspected by a person competent in scaffolding supervision, erection and maintenance before erection and at least once a week. The upright member of scaffolding will be inspected for corrosion by verifying the bottom of the tube has not lost more than 0.5mm of wall thickness. Note: Tubular members might show deep pitting by corrosion on the surface of the tube and still comply with the requirement "corrosion free" as defined but additional wear and tear at the tube causes mechnical reduction of the wall thickness. All scaffolding shall be checked after bad weather or after a mishap resulting in jarring, tilting or overloading. Special attention will be given to base plates and access ladders. The results are to be recorded in the scaffold register.
    Safety
Scaffolding shall not be Left partly built or partly dismantled except for normal working stoppages (i.e. over weekends) or left in an unsafe condition. If this is unavoidable then the scaffolding must be fenced off and provided with warning signs, moved or altered while work is in progress.
